gtX Dash - Media Network Streming

[ Return to article list ]

XBMS Networking Tutorial

Setting up an xbms share will allow you to play files on your pc from your xbox, which is commonly known as network streaming, so you can view your media files on your xbox while they remain stored on your pc.

you will need :

1 xbox
1 PC running windows XP with a properly installed network card
1 gtX dash mods with v1.04a or later
1 Crossover cable or a network switch

Some time to read this properly, and we assume you have a basic knowledge of how to ftp to your xbox. If you dont then please download this and come back to here once you have acquired that skill.

Step 1 connect xbox and pc with a crossover cable.

This should be self explanatory (plug it in sam!) Just get them connected!

Step 2 Find out the ip address of your pc.

Run a dos prompt (command prompt) and type in "ipconfig" and hit enter. It should be set to 192.168.0.x (where x is some number less than 255). Make a note of this IP number as you will need this later. If it is 0.0.0.0 you havent setup IP networking or you have a network issue (probable hardware issue with network card). Go get some help or sort it out.

Step 3 Setup an IP address forMedia Centre on you Xbox.

If you have have a DHCP server running on your network, Media centre will already be setup (in terms of having a IP address at least) and you can check that out to make sure in the settings - system info screen - see here. You can hop to the next step.

If you dont have a DHCP server or don't even know what that means then we will need to setup a STATIC IP for media center, this requires you to edit the XML config file.

Launch your ftp server from the main dash, (both triggers and A). Connect to the ftp server with your favourite ftp program from your pc and browse to this location :

edrive\apps\xbmp2\Locale\nxbmc\ xboxmediacenter.xml

Open the file xboxmediacenter.xml with a text editor (if you are using flash fxp just right click and select edit)

You need to change the IP address to something suitable for your network setup, ideally you want it to be the same address that you have your xbox ftp server set to. We suggest something like 192.168.0.100, so in the picture below replace 'DHCP' with the actual static ip address you want.

Step 4 Get ccXgui and install it to your computer

You can get it here (mirror 1) or try here (mirror 2).

When you run it it will look something like this :

We unchecked 'run as a nt service' (only for NT users i guess) and added a couple of shares, you can see the status at the bottom 'server running on ip x.x.x.x port: 1400. All that is left to do now is to tell media center about the server, this is done again in the xboxmediacenter.xml

Step 5 Setup the shares for Media Centre

Media centre needs to know the IP address of the computer that is running the ccXgui program that is providing the xbms network protocol, this is setup by editing the file

edrive\apps\xbmp2\Locale\nxbmc\ xboxmediacenter.xml . You can see below the section you need to edit to obtain the correct IPp address. you will also need to do it for each type of media share, ie for music, video and picture. You will find a similar bit of code in each circumstance.

Hope this has helped you out, if you can offer any suggestions for the improvement of this document let us know in here .
